This is a very unusual piece that was produced by a Greek Artist named, Miienekos who was from Ioannina, Greece, about 1970.
The piece stands 5 and 1/2 in height. It is just shy of 9 in in circumference. It is design in the shape of a cup/chalice, with a typical "bell" shape arising from a round base. The base is 3 and 1/4 in in diameter, while the top of the cup (uncovered ) is 4 and 1/2 in in diameter. The base has an incised design, which is simple, of typical marks for "waves". The cup itself has a banded motif of swirling leaves and what appear to be open blossoms. Each side has a handle, a' la a loving cup. These are applied on the cup itself, and well as right under the rim of the top. Each handle is 3 in long. The handles are depicted as twining leaves.
The rim of the top of the cup/chalice is deeply incised in shapes of scrolls, curling toward each other. Encircling the rim are 12 three quarter circles, with the opening intended to be used as a hanging place for spoons. Unfortunately, the spoons are no longer around. However, this does not detract from the decorative value of the cup.
The top of the cup is 3 and 3/4 in diameter. It repeats the design that is found on the base. It is capped with an open faced five petaled flower. It is made from mixed metal silver and electroplated.
The piece is marked with the Greek Artist Name of Miienekos and produced by S. Benekos Sons Company from Ioannina, Greece. It is in lovely vintage condition and would be a great conversation piece to add to your home decor!
