Maple Triple-Mirror Vanity Desk, Northern Furniture Company, circa 1920 :-

This Maple Triple Mirror Vanity Desk, by Northern Furniture Company of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, reached the market in 1920. The company’s mark, Northern Furniture Company of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, inside a shield, is burned into the sidewall of one of the drawers.
The unique styling of the intricately turned legs, stretcher and mirror posts is a signature feature of the Northern Furniture Company line offered in 1920, as evidenced by the display of its furniture accompanying the Company’s announcement of its line in the December, 1920 edition of the Grand Rapids Furniture record.
The vanity desk has five drawers with dovetail joinery. The two deep drawers have brass bat-wing and bail handle pulls. The center and two side top drawers have filigreed brass mushroom pulls.
The triple mirror frame assembly is fastened to the vanity desk proper in a manner obviating the need for separate bracketry. The center mirror is capped with a broken-neck design and finial pediment.
This is a vanity desk from the start of the roaring twenties in mint condition. It is a great fit for a bedroom with a retro roaring twenties' décor.

19thc Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase - American, Architectural :-

Elegant simplicity along with authentic antique texture, a proud silhouette, and gorgeous wood make this big bookcase or display cabinet remarkable. It is unusually clean and crisp in design, with no mullions, no visible hardware, little carving. The doors are striking big sheets of wavy glass, and all doors upper and lower operate with keys. The clarity of line, and minimal ornamentation give it a modern feel. Dating from the early 19th century, the case is entirely made of mahogany with beautiful flame doors. The inside adjustable shelving is currently painted in a milky green, over pine.
A large piece, over 8 feet tall and and over 9 feet wide, it is made in two big wide cabinet pieces, as well as the cornice and a footing base. The whole thing was designed to fit flush against a wall so it is shaped at back bottom to allow for baseboard molding. Remarkable piece, dating from 1820-1850.
Excellent antique condition. The finish is old, with a shine on the shallow counter surface where it was polished over the years, and a more matte finish elsewhere. The interior paint is in good shape, but could be repainted if a different color is desired. We have working keys for it, although they vary in shape and date from different times. One small piece of trim missing on the right side at the back, but otherwise intact. This piece will make a room, outfit a library, dramatize a dining room, showcase a collection, bring scale and texture to a large family room wall in a new home, or bridge styles in polished eclectic space. It has great possibility. We can provide more photographs, and detailed dimensions if you are interested. Dimensions: Width 113" x 22" depth x 100" height.

Persian Lilian Oriental Rug, Hamadan Region circa 1920 , 6.3 x 5 :-

We are pleased to offer this Lilian from the first quarter of 20th century, measuring 6.3 x 5.Although the pattern ultimately derives from Sarouk carpets,it is more spacious and large-scaled,with an attractive use of open space.Lilian rugs have a bolder appearance and a more direct appeal than their Sarouk counterparts.Consequently they have always been popular among American buyers.Another appealing characteristic of Lilians is that their scatter pieces are always wider than their counterparts of other weaving regions.Whereas places like Sarouk, kashan or Kerman produce 4x6 sizes,in Lilian the standard is approximately 5x6,giving them a squarish format, which is what we are offering here. This is a very well-balanced and well-drawn rug and as shown in one of the pictures, very tightly woven with a crisp and clear back. The wool pile has a soft and silky quality to it.The pile on this Lilian varies from medium to low. Therefore it is not an even pile. This piece has been cleaned professionally and is free of any odors or stains.

Antique Georgian Pencil Drawing Circa 1820 English Signed Miss Jane Ogilvy After Constable :-

Georgian Pencil Drawing Circa 1820 English Signed Miss Jane Ogilvy After Constable
We are delighted to have discovered this original early 19th century pencil drawing on good heavy paper that is one of a pair (each retailed separately see its partner TA11247). If you are looking for a unique work of period art to adorn your walls, look no further.
The artist certainly had some talent as the scene that she has drawn immediately transports one back to rural Regency period England. Her depiction shows the fork in the river where the watermill is stationed and an 18th century dressed couple gathering water. This depiction reflects the ordinary life that contemporaries such as John Constable (1776-1837) strived to paint. See his famous paintings The Hay Wain, Flatford Mill and The Corn Field.
The composition is very well balanced. The depth of field and attention to detail all convey the talent of the female artist. Everything is to scale, this is not a naive amateur attempt at drawing. Housed under old bubbled glass, within a gilt slip and stained pine frame. The frame again typical for the 1820 period, simple and elegant not to detract from the drawing. The drawing is signed in pencil bottom right and the artists detail are also written in very old script to the original backing paper on the reverse. Also to the reverse is the following inscription " Seton Found in old box at Bid????1898 Seton Drawn by Mifs Ogilvy * I think ??????"
Size: 12" by 10.5", actual drawing 7.25" by 5.5" The last images show its partner that is sold separately. These images are taken in natural English daylight.

Condition: The actual pencil drawing upon paper is in excellent condition. The soft stained pine frame has some surface indents from age/ wear but nothing serious or that one would not expect after 200 years.

Antique Miniature Painting in Original Frame, Bare Breast Demeter, Goddess of Harvest, w Rhea :-

A fabulous small painting, signed by artist, and housed in the original 19th century frame of wood, this one depicts the Greek Goddess Demeter (harvest Goddess, promoter of bounty) being led by Rhea (the Greek mother of gods, sign of fertility). It is a "prayer" painting of sorts, and asks for much fertile crops, bountiful harvest. The painting is wonderful - a gem you might want for your Doll House display for Bru and other antique dolls. We often sell this type of miniature painting to adorn the walls of doll displays and this one would be particularly lovely. Not really considered a "naughty" even though Demeter's breast is bared, since the meaning of this painting is very specific, and the bared breast is one of her identifying attributes in depictions of this Goddess. Our enlarged photos do not do it justice, and it does show much nicer in person. This owing to a bit of "blow-out" of detail that is caused by the lighting and digital camera's reaction to it. I did not take the painting out of frame, but it looks to me to be painted on card or panel, rather than the usual material used for such miniatures. The painting is fabulous, truly, and all the more so for it's story. Painting is miniature, 4.5" x 3 3/8" and housed in a frame that measures 6.75" x 3.75" and .75" deep. Frame is wood.
Very good to excellent for age and type. It is in undamaged state protected under glass within a nice mid-1800s wood frame. The painting is likely a small one done after (apres) a larger work of art, as was often done for the Grand Tour tourist trade, 1700s to 1800s. I have not yet researched to find the original or its artist, but I'm sure some searching will tell us who painted the original and where it hangs. It became a popular genre, this painting of old Master paintings in miniature, and allowed Grand Tour travelers a way to take home mementos of their travels to the great museums springing up to their pleasure.

Fabulous Antique Hand Carved Oak Panel in Frame, Figural Bas Relief Grotesques and Full Relief Bust :-

I suspect this is an Italian carved panel from an elaborate cabinet or a panel salvaged from an old installation of wood paneling in an opulent Italian Villa. The Grotesques (figures and style) are very Renaissance revival, or perhaps even as old as the Renaissance. I'm unsure how to test the wood. The carvings are beautifully composed and crafted. I would half expect to see this one in the Medici Palace in Florence. I am always drawn to carved architectural panels and use them in my own homes as decorative wall hangings, new faces built into cabinetry. This one is just waiting for me to figure out how and where I can put it to use. But in the meantime, it's open to purchase. That outer lemonwood frame is a much later addition but it does contain the carving nicely and was a custom frame someone's had made. The rich carving includes the rather unique full relief carving of the bearded figure in center - probably a portrait piece. The added Grotesque figure up above and the elegantly carved florals and swirls are all done in finest work. This is a fabulous panel to display or to incorporate into a custom cabinetry project in your own home. I'm thinking of having it made up as the door to a medicine cabinet for a bathroom. You might think of a perfect way to use it while I'm deciding.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The panel is likely 1700s or earlier, and definitely not later than early 1800s. The quality is high, equal to panels I've seen in Renaissance Palaces, museums, and I see no reason to think it might not date quite early. We have some magnificent old carved works of art, and I consider this to be one. No chips to speak of, no breaks or restorations. And it's very heavy old natural forest growth wood, as well. The frame, as noted, is lemon wood or something very light, and is not as old as the panel. It might date 20th century, but is a nice border and presentation for the panel if someone wishes to wall-hang and display that way. Me? I'm wanting to work it into the kitchen cabinetry or bathroom - somewhere. Loving this one! That head extends out about 2.75" in depth, very unusual. Wonderful form and quality.

22kt Gold & Venetian Glass Antique Grand Tour c.1900 Extra Wide Museum Quality Bracelet :-

I can pretty much guarantee that you will NEVER see another bracelet like this one again in your life. Most likely a commissioned piece made in Italy for a Victorian Lady at the turn of the century, or earlier, there are 10 Venetian Murano glass millefiore Gold swirled beads, encapsulated in 22kt Gold petal cups. Each pair of the 5 pairs of two beads each are intersected with wide 22kt Gold etched flat panels with scalloped edges to frame the beautiful Venetian Murano glass millefiore beads which are also swirled with gold flecked glass. There are six of these exquisite panels, each almost and 1 ¼” from North to South and a little over ½” wide, plus the hidden V spring and box clasp which also measures the same for a total of seven etched panels. The handmade beads have all kinds of colors and sliced canes and they are truly antique lampwork beads. There are imperfections and folds in them, but they are stunning. Each bead measures about 5/8” in diameter. By now, you are getting an idea of the size and scope of this antique Grand Tour, c.1900 or earlier 22kt Gold bracelet. There is also a later addition of a 14kt Gold safety chain with a spring ring closure for ease in putting on and taking off the bracelet. The bracelet is 1 ¼” wide and 8 ¼” in length of pure unadulterated luxury. The 8 ¼” length is needed because of the size of the glass beads, it raises the bracelet off of the wrist quite a bit and it will fit up to a 7 inch wrist. This is an extraordinary wearable antique heirloom piece of jewelry that is of museum quality. There are no breaks, mends, or problems of any kind. The 22kt is not marked on the bracelet, but it has been independently verified three times by various jewelers. The bracelet is not marked, probably due to its age, which is c.1900 or earlier. It was not until 1906 that the US required .
the marking of Gold content, possibly on imports too, and I have no idea about Italy. The flat etched design work is definitely academic to the Victorian Era, and I have consulted with another jeweler who specializes in American antique jewelry and we both feel that this was a commissioned piece made in Italy during the Victorian Era as a Grand Tour piece. I bought the piece at an auction, and that it was from the estate of a 93 year old woman from upstate New York. An absolutely magnificent and stunning statement piece of jewelry, this one is a piece that is absolutely wearable, highly collectible and a stunning display piece of antique 22kt Gold and Venetian glass turn of the century Grand Tour jewelry that will ever come around again.

Pair of Gorgeous Vintage Reuge Musical Triangle Tables in Italian Marquetry :-

We are thrilled to offer this gorgeous pair of vintage musical tables. The Italian-made tables feature remarkable marquetry ornamentation and Reuge musical movements.
In 1865, company founder Charles Reuge established his first musical pocket watch shop in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland.
Several years later, Charles' son Albert opened a music box factory and incorporated the Reuge Musical Movement into unusual objects like compacts, cigarette lighters and eventually tables.
As you can see, both tables are triangular in shape and feature hinged tops.
The tops are decorated with an exquisite marquetry pattern of florals and foliate scrolling.
The woods are in various shades of light maple and darker burled maple along with ash accents and an oak background.
Tiny strips of light-colored banding accents the lower edge of the table tops and the squared, slender tapered legs.
Subtle marquetry flowers in light maple decorate the tops of each leg.
Each taple top opens on a hinge. Once opened, the musical movement's stop-button is released and the music plays.
One table plays O Sole Mio, a classic Italian song written in 1898, and given voice by some of the world's greatest tenors, including Luciano Pavarotti.
The other table plays Torna A Surriento, another famous Italian song performed by a wide array of performers from Plácido Domingo to Elvis Presley.
The Torna A Surriento plays very well while the movement for O Sole Mio is a bit slow.
Winding keys can be found on the underside of each table top along with paper maker's tags which include the song names, the Reuge logo, and the inscription "Swiss Musical Movement".
Each winding key is stamped "Reuge".
Impressed marks on the underside of each tabletop read "30".
You will notice that both tables exhibit some slight crazing in the transparent finish as well as a few minor scratches here and there.

Measurements: Each table measures 18 1/2" tall, 17 1/2" long, and 17 1/2" wide, Table tops are 1 7/16" deep, Legs are 16 5/8" long, (3 lbs., 14 oz each) Total Weight: 7 lbs., 12 oz.

Sterling Figural Sea Motif/ Nautical Sardine Dish-Wood & Hughes c.1880 :-

Amazing Figural Sea Motif Sterling Silver Sardine Dish in a sea/nautical theme complete with ocean waves, seaweed and barnacles, created by the well known silversmith firm of Wood & Hughes, circa 1880. This piece has great nautical detail work -applied seaweed/barnacles, shell shape and a wave pattern throughout. The dish is irregularly shaped-like a sea shell-with a scalloped border. The rectangular cartouche handle has a monogram of MV (it could be AM if flipped). Dish measures 7 inches by 4 inches and is 1 inch tall; weight is 104 grams/3.34 oz troy. The W & H /Wood & Hughes/sterling hallmark is on the reverse. Condition is excellent-no dent or dings and very little age wear. Definitely a gift/presentation piece used either very little or not at all.

This is truly a rare piece of Sea/Nautical themed sterling silver; there were only a handful of 19th century silversmiths with the ability to create high quality, lifelike sterling silver serving pieces with a Sea/Nautical motif-one of the most famous being Gorham's Narragansett series; George Shiebler and Whiting and Dominick and Haff also all created some fabulous sea motif sterling silver-the majority of these pieces, however, were never produced as a full line, and most were one of a kind, custom designed, special order treasures.

Anthonie Jacobus van Wyngaerde Dutch Antique Painting of Cows at Pasture :-

ANTHONIE JACOBUS VAN WYNGAERDE (DUTCH, 1808-1887) OIL ON PANEL, Cows at Pasture, signed lower right "A J Wyngaerde f."
An exceedingly fine work of crisp realism with touches of impressionism, this vibrant and striking scene captures a lush pasture against a forested backdrop with a small brook under the wispy clouds of summer as cattle rest and relax in the cool afternoon. Typical of Wyngaerde's scenes, the painting compresses a large moment with an extensive collection of animals and vivid foliage into a small mahogany panel. His works only rarely come on the market and are always quite exceptional. The present example was recently conserved and is in flawless condition other than the frame, which is naturally a replacement. It is a magnificent selection for the serious collector of Dutch School works from the 19th Century.

19th C. O/C of Farmyard Animals by Julius Scheuerer, 1859-1913 :-

Offered for sale is a 19th century oil on canvas of farmyard animals by German artist, Julius Scheuerer depicting sheep, a feather-footed rooster, a chicken, a crane, a dog, and a cat set against a vividly colored background. Idyllic in nature, this finely detailed painting, with its charming subject matter and bold use of color, is the type of 19th century pastoral art so desired by collectors.
Julius Scheuerer, 1859-1913, was a noted German artist who had a distinguished career painting animals, mostly of the avian variety, and placing them in idyllic pastoral settings. He used the natural color of bird feathers and contrasting animal coats to add depth and tone to his charming scenes. Mr. Scheuerer was also an avid lifelong student of the behavioral habits and anatomical science of birds. He relied upon this vast knowledge to create settings that were filled with fine detail and vivid colors; paintings that continue to have a timeless appeal.
The painting is set into a gilded frame, is in excellent age related condition, and signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner.
Size of frame: 24" Height x 39" Width.

Born of Irish parents in 1918, Tom W. Quinn has quite simply dedicated his life to art. A life dedicated to art? Yes, and a heart and soul, too. As this exhibition opens he will have just reached the grand age of 93, but in his rambling, light-filled studio in the Dordogne, Tom Quinn continues to paint every day, – depicting in beautifully soft, chalky hues the world around him – busy cafés, bustling markets, intimate interiors, a game of boules, dappled sunlight in a summer garden and colour-splashed picnics by the river. Impressionist, personal observations of la France profonde, executed with his brushes but painted with his heart and soul.
In the late 1940s Tom attended the Camberwell School of Art, London and was fortunate to study under such tutors as Lawrence Gowing, as well as Victor Pasmore and William Coldstream, founders of the celebrated Euston Road School. T.W. Quinn's artworks have been offered at auction houses and galleries throughout the world, particularly in Ireland and London.

TransAtlantic :-

Synopsis:
1919. Emily Ehrlich watches as two young airmen, Alcock and Brown, emerge from the carnage of the First World War to pilot the very first non-stop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to the west of Ireland. Among the letters being carried on the aircraft is one which will not be opened for almost a hundred years. 1998. Senator George Mitchell criss-crosses the ocean in search of an elusive Irish peace. How many more bereaved mothers and grandmothers must he meet before an agreement can be reached? 1845. Frederick Douglass, a black American slave, lands in Ireland to champion ideas of democracy and freedom, only to find a famine unfurling at his feet. On his travels he inspires a young maid to go to New York to embrace a free world, but the land does not always fulfill its promises for her. From the violent battlefields of the Civil War to the ice lakes of northern Missouri, it is her youngest daughter Emily who eventually finds her way back to Ireland.
Can we pass from the new world to the old? How does the past shape the future? In TransAtlantic, National Book Award-winning Colum McCann has achieved an outstanding act of literary bravura. Intricately crafted, poetic and deeply affecting it weaves together personal stories to explore the fine line between what is real and what is imagined, and the tangled skein of connections that make up our lives.
Review: Beautifully constructed ... a novel of true resonance and power ( Independent)

This novel is beautifully hypnotic in its movements, from the grand (between two continents, across three centuries) to the most subtle. Silkily threading together public events and private feelings, TransAtlantic says no to death with every line. Those who can't see the point of historical novels will find their answer here: in all intelligent fiction, the past has not passed ( Emma Donoghue)

Expertly constructed ... At its best, as in the superbly rendered early scene of Alcock and Brown's flight, the prose is poetically vivid (Mark O'Connell Observer)

Few contemporary writers are better at subtracting the sublime from the base ... A kind of cat's cradle of transatlantic journeys, all connected, all built on another thing (Hermione Hoby Guardian)

A challenging, beautifully woven novel about the real and imagined. Fans of Ian McEwan will love it (Viv Groskop Red)

McCann is no stranger to literary prizes - but if I were him, I'd start clearing my mantelpiece for a few more (James Walton Daily Mail)

McCann makes us wonder at how his characters get from A to B; he encourages us to see how journeys elicit distinctions and closeness between people . He is especially striking when he describes the weather: the wind muscles through the grass; clouds perform a curtsy. He has a telegraphic style of transmitting historical content (Freya Johnston Daily Telegraph
Colum McCann is a very gifted, charming writer; in full, rhapsodic-onrush mode, he is hard to resist. He coins a good phrase... TransAtlantic is deft, well crafted, and broad in its imaginative range. The many people who loved his last novel will certainly enjoy this one ( Guardian)

A marvellously engrossing journey, studded with ideas and lyrical treats ( The Times)

It is a record not of great men and great moments but of small, elegant details and personal loss ( New Statesman)

McCann's prose aspires towards the atmospheric and descriptive...Stylistically, McCann shares a great deal with Michael Ondaatje, while the presence of Don DeLillo, both in form and content, is also apparent ... McCann is drawn to lives lived, and his vivid, reactive and heartfelt fiction lives and breathes, sighs and weeps. Above all, his characters remember the past and contemplate the future ( Irish Times)

Blending fact and fiction with a poet's precision ... There's no doubting the novel's lyrical and emotional power though ( Sunday Express)

McCann's ability to move through such vastly differing places and personalities is as uncanny as it is relentless. Most of the novel is held remarkably together by only the most delicate of strands, through the gentle echoes resonating between the book's diverse wandering characters ... What drives the novel - like all of McCann's fiction - is simply the author's sturdy, humane, unfailing knack for animating period and place in the inner minutiae of individual lives ( Sunday Times)

Beautifully poignant (Mail on Sunday)

Majestic (Sunday Times)

A vivid novel of three personal stories intricately woven together around the first transatlantic flight (Mail on Sunday)

History comes vividly to life in a majestic work whose characters traverse the Atlantic ( Sunday Times Summer Reads)

It is, simply, perfect. McCann's writing is sublime; his images shine (Irish Examiner)

A shamelessly daring, ambitious epic of a novel ... McCann's impulse is towards a Joycean magnanimity, affirmativeness and bravery ... (Lady)

McCann is at the height of his lyrical powers ... Though it may sound forbiddingly schematic, TransAtlantic's narrative strands are deftly linked through the fictional Ehrlich family. Far from being a celebration of historical acts of derring-do, McCann's ambitious, touching and occasionally joyous novel is a paean to self-determination in all its forms (Daragh Reddin Metro)

The forces at work in our lives, Colum McCann makes arrestingly clear, begin long before we're born. Several wider thematic links also emerge - and so slyly that days after finishing the book, you're still making them (Sheena Davit and Mary Carr Irish Mail on Sunday)
A very refined piece of writing (Philip Hensher Spectator)

The book I've enjoyed most this year (Andrew Marr Mail on Sunday)

History comes vividly alive in a majestic work (Sunday Times, Summer Reading)
