Decorative Pair of Middle Eastern Pearl and Silver Replica Guns :-

Really cool pair of decorative guns that we picked up coming back through southwestern US on a recent trip. We couldn't get info on their origin but we're thinking India? Afghanistan? Mexico? Anyway these flintlocks have a great look and should be hanging over a doorway or fireplace or in the den. These never were operating guns so they never can be used as such. The inlay work with the mother of pearl and silver colored wire is fantastic. They measure 33 inches long and 4 inches tall at the butt. Please feel free to ask questions, additional photos are always available and delivery is easily arranged.

Turkish made, round-to-round, pin-fastened, .63 caliber, smoothbore, 9 1/2", lightly engraved, iron barrel with a “false” European signature, floral scroll engravings and two spurious London Gunmaker Co. Proof-marks: of typical Ottoman Turkish manufacture. Etched and engraved sidelock Flintlock mechanism with a flat, border-engraved, semi-banana-form lockplate, its matching gooseneck hammer and its original frizzen, etc. Retains smooth, steel-gray, surfaces with engraved geometric patterns and Crescent Moons: strong mainspring, though does not always hold on full-cocked position. Molded and finely carved, nicely figured, hardwood (walnut) fullstock of classic Ottoman Turkish form with deep relief and incised line carvings. Pronounced bulbous butt and an incised carved forestock with an integral/“false”-ramrod; as is typical of many Turkish Pistols for which the ramrod or “Somma” was carried separately. Very good+ stock with some scattered handling marks, light abrasions and small chips. The wrist with its coarsely embossed, oval wrist-escutcheon and the remaining mounts of classic Ottoman Turkish design with somewhat coarsely embossed details, en suite. The stirrup type butt-cap with a European-inspired, pronounced pommel-cap with deeply embossed martioal-theme borders and a matching finial. The trigger-guard with a coarsely embossed floral finial and bow. Roughly embossed, rifle type/triangular sideplate with both of its sidebolts. In overall very good+ original flintlock condition with generally smooth lightly cleaned steel-gray surfaces. The barrel and lock with matching silver-gray surfaces with some light patches of discoloration and a good touch-hole. Both with sharp geometric and floral engravings of traditional Turkish design. The stock with only some scattered handling marks, 85%+ finish, sharp contours and a fine relief carved floral apron, at the barrel-tang. The brass hardware with smooth surfaces with a light mustard patina and some light wear. A nice example of a good quality Ottoman Turkish Flintlock Holster Pistol, ca. 1830. Overall length, 16". President George W. Bush - Signed Letter And Commemorative Ballpoint With Presidential Seal :-

President George W. Bush signed legislation sponsor appreciation letter on White House Stationary, along with the commemorative ballpoint pen with the Presidential Seal. The signature is uniquely different from auto pen examples and presumed authentic. The letter was to Congressman Bill Young, who proposed the legislation. The letter concerned the President's having designated the week of July 28, 1991, as National Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Week. To me it seems that there was a typographical mistake that was not caught. Since the letter refers to the President having signed the resolution on August 6th, 1991, seems to me that the week was meant to be the following year... not the month before. A mistake in a Presidential letter should enhance the value, should it not? For me, just the idea of having a signed letter from the President of The United States is exciting enough. Congressman Young kept is through the years.
Size: The letter is 6.5 inches by 9 inches.
Circa: Letter is dated August 20th, 1991.
Provenance: From the Estate of Congressman Bill Young.
Charles William "Bill" Young (December 16, 1930 – October 18, 2013) was an American politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 2013. A Republican from Florida, Young served as chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations from 1999 to 2005. He was the longest-serving Republican member of Congress at the time of his death.

Amelia Earhart and Others Signed Gavel, From John Nance Garner's Vice Presidency :-

This is an awesome and important offering. John Nance Garner served as Vice President from 1933 - 1941, under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Vice President Garner's secretary, Louis M. Friday, would have notable visitors sign the gavel. The gavel has approximately 20 signatures, including Earhart's and Garner's. (The Vice President presides over the Senate; hence, the gavel.)
When Garner passed away on November 7, 1967, tributes poured in from across the nation, but no mention of the bucket quote appeared in print until the Time magazine obituary of November 17, 1967, which stated, "Plain-spoken to the last, he always regretted having given up his Speaker's role for the vice presidency, which he said `wasn't worth a pitcher of warm spit.'"
Size: 11 by 4 inches.
Condition: Very Good.
Circa: All signatures were collected between 1933 and 1941.
PROVENANCE From the Estate of Louis M. Friday, assistant to Vice President John Nance Garner

President John F. Kennedy - Family Photographs And (Later) News Article, Circa 1960s :-

Regardless of one's politics, the nation was enamored with the First Family when JFK was President, and the White House became affectionately known as "Camelot." A young vital family that actually brought small children, (indeed an infant!)
We offer this group, which included a color photograph of the Kennedy family, as well as a glossy and matte finish of this particular photo. There are two portrait photos of President Kennedy. All are 8" x 10".
Finally a yellowed newspaper clipping of Mrs. Kennedy and the two children on holiday playing with a Samoyed puppy in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Bob Feller Scrap Book, Early Career of Hall of Fame Pitcher, 1937 - 1938 :-

Known as Rapid Robert, Bob Feller (HOF) of the Cleveland Indians during the late 1930's thru 1940's was considered to be and is still considered to be one of baseball's all time great pitchers. He was known for his blazing fast ball and impressive strikeout record. Who knows what he would have accomplished in his career if he had not taken time off to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II? Feller served as Gun Captain aboard the USS Alabama, and missed four seasons during his service in World War II, being decorated with five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars.
We are offering a wonderful scrap book that is filled with photos and clippings from the beginning of Fellers career in 1937 and 1938. Many of the items relate to him finishing high school and leaving his Iowa home. This item actually consists of two scrap books that have been attached to each other. The first is labeled as volume 1 and contains 60 hand-numbered pages. The second labeled as volume 2 contains 100 hand-numbered pages. The condition is as one would expect for a scrapbook of old paper clippings and photos. There is lots of yellowing of the paper and it is somewhat fragile. Several pages have broken loose from the scrapbook binding, but they are present and in place. This was clearly a labor of love for somebody to put together and is a joy to look at now. There is one name associated with who put the books together, but they appear to be possibly the work of several individuals. It is unlikely that you will ever find such a comprehensive set of items about the early career of such a great player, as what you see here. This is a remarkable collection and should sit proudly on the shelf of a devoted Cleveland Indians fan. Oh, yes, Feller's first contract at the age of 17 was for $10,000. What would that be worth today?

10 Things You Didn’t Know About: World’s Fairs :-

1. While World’s Fairs are temporary, their impacts have had lasting impacts and effects. Take the formidable structures unveiled during world fairs, such as Museum of Science and Industry – built for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Seattle’s Space Needle of the 1962 World’s Fair, and the Eiffel Tower, built for the Exposition Universelle in 1889. In fact, some people wanted the Eiffel Tower dismantled after the fair!

2. There is an active community of people keeping the history and interest in present-day World’s Fairs alive – two popular online sites are WorldsFairCommunity.com with a very active Forum section and ExpoMuseum.com – a site rich with history and details about past and present World’s Fairs.
-

3. Since 1994 there’s been a World’s Fair Memorabilia Show held in Chicago every year. Largely focused on the Chicago World’s Fair of 1933-34, the event also includes items from other World’s Fairs.

4. One of the most visited sites devoted to World’s Fair memorabilia is the Queens Museum of Art. The museum is home to the Panorama of the City of New York, built for an unveiled at the 1964 World’s Fair.

5. The Library of Congress contains 468 references on the topic of World’s Fairs. These resources include everything from new products unveiled at World’s Fairs, maps of fair grounds, music, food and industries of the World’s, and tragedies surrounding World’s Fairs, among other topics.

6. Memorabilia from World’s Fairs are a popular item of auction house and antiques shops around the world, and online auction sites across the Internet. The items range from the very rare, like a cast iron doorstop (show above) from the 1939 New York World’s Fair which sold at auction for $1,200, to the more common items such as World’s Fair postcards which, when found, can be purchased for as little a few dollars up to a few hundred, depending on age, condition, and topic.

7. eBay, regularly lists between 5,000 and 10,000 World’s Fair related items for auction.

8.A focal point of every World’s Fair is technology, innovation, industrial development, and in turn many items that are part of our society today, or served as the catalyst for things we use today, made their debut at these fairs. The list includes

Studebaker Land Cruiser – 1933 Chicago World’s Fair Ford Mustang – 1964 New York World’s Fair Cracker Jack, Juicy Fruit gum and Cream of Wheat – 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, The ice cream cone – 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair Ferris Wheel – 1893 Chicago World’s Fair Touch screen displays and Cherry Coke – 1982 Knoxville World’s Fai.

9. The first documented World’s Fair was the 1851 Great Exhibition, held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. The Crystal Palace, built specifically for the Great Exhibition, was designed by Joseph Paxton, an English gardener and architect who later received knighthood for his role in creating The Crystal Palace.

10. Expo 2010 Shanghai China set records for the most countries represented and largest site for a World’s Fair, and it broke the record for the most attendance (more than 73 million people – including 1.03 million on a single day) at an Expo.

King Tut may have been killed by a hippopotamus.

Surprisingly little is known about the life of the boy pharaoh Tutankhamen, but some historians believe they know how he died. Scans of the young king’s body show that he was embalmed without his heart or his chest wall. This drastic departure from traditional Egyptian burial practice suggests that he may have suffered a horrific injury prior to his death. According to a handful of Egyptologists, one of the most likely causes for this wound would have been a bite from a hippopotamus. Evidence indicates that the Egyptians hunted the beasts for sport, and statues found in King Tut’s tomb even depict him in the act of throwing a harpoon. If the boy pharaoh was indeed fond of stalking dangerous game, then his death might have been the result of a hunt gone wrong.

Egyptian pharaohs were often overweight.

Egyptian art commonly depicts pharaohs as being trim and statuesque, but this was most likely not the case. The Egyptian diet of beer, wine, bread and honey was high in sugar, and studies show that it may have done a number on royal waistlines. Examinations of mummies have indicated that many Egyptian rulers were unhealthy and overweight, and even suffered from diabetes. A notable example is the legendary Queen Hatshepsut, who lived in the 15th century B.C. While her sarcophagus depicts her as slender and athletic, historians believe she was actually obese and balding.

Egyptian workers were known to organize labor strikes.

Even though they regarded the pharaoh as a kind of living god, Egyptian workers were not afraid to protest for better working conditions. The most famous example came in the 12th century B.C. during the reign of the New Kingdom pharaoh Ramses III. When laborers engaged in building the royal necropolis at Deir el-Medina did not receive their usual payment of grain, they organized one of the first recorded strikes in history. The protest took the form of a sit-in: The workers simply entered nearby mortuary temples and refused to leave until their grievances were heard. The gamble worked, and the laborers were eventually given their overdue rations.

Egyptian women had a wide range of rights and freedoms.

While they may have been publicly and socially viewed as inferior to men, Egyptian women enjoyed a great deal of legal and financial independence. They could buy and sell property, serve on juries, make wills and even enter into legal contracts. Egyptian women did not typically work outside the home, but those who did usually received equal pay for doing the same jobs as men. Unlike the women of ancient Greece, who were effectively owned by their husbands, Egyptian women also had the right to divorce and remarry. Egyptian couples were even known to negotiate an ancient prenuptial agreement. These contracts listed all the property and wealth the woman had brought into the marriage and guaranteed that she would be compensated for it in the event of a divorce.

Lovely Antique French or Viennese Enamel Miniature Dressing Screen, a Desk or Boudoir Clock with 3 Figural Enamel Panels :-

Delightful & rare antique French or Vienna enamel 5 1/8" wide miniature desk or boudoir clock in the form of a dressing screen, three figural enamel panels framed in gilt Dore bronze with enamel clock dial & wonderful decorative appeal! Simply gorgeous and in superb condition, if only the tiny clock was working... Three hand painted enamel panels with a romantic theme, the right showing a man holding a bouquet of flowers, winged cupid, angel or putti floating in the clouds above. The left side with a woman holding a vanity fan, also cherub or putti in the clouds. The center depicting a man and woman, the woman seated while the man holds what may be a basket, picnic maybe? All framed in thick, heavy bronze with Dore gilded finish and as ornate as can be with a Rococo style. Note the two winged figures at the top sides of the center section frame, lovely! The back clock movement cover is simply marked "Metal Dore", no makes on the movement or elsewhere. A wonderful little piece, rare dressing screen form!

Very good condition. Some slight wear to the gilt finish is visible on the front of the framework but no bents, breaks or damage there. No chips, cracks or damage that I can see on any of the three enamel panels. The clock is currently not running and is missing the glass front but no chips or damage to the enamel dial. From the back, it appears that the clock housing may have been remounted or reset. All of the clock movement appears to be intact, some tarnish is visible but, as noted above, it is not currently running. Key included. See pictures for measurements.

LARGE French Silver Sacred Heart Ex Voto Notre Dame de Lourdes

This is a rare and exceptional silver example featuring a mounted sculptural figure of "Notre Dame de Lourdes". It originates from a fine collection in the south of France and dates towards 1880. The name, "Notre Dame de Lourdes" (or Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes) is French for "Our Lady of Lourdes". It refers to the Marian apparition that is reported to have appeared before various individuals in separate occasions around Lourdes, France.
This an unusually is large "pendentif" (meant for hanging) sacred heart, measuring 3" x 2 3/4" x 1 1/2" tall. The heart is extra "puffy" and measures 1 1/4" tall from the tabletop. There is a large silver ormolu 2-D sculpture mounted to the center, Mary with her hands folded in prayer. This figure is incredibly detailed, you can see the serene expression on Mary's face, the details of her robes, the hanging rosary and cross (from her arm). Under her bare feet are the word Jesus L'Immaculee Conception": under this reads N.D. de Lourdes. The beauty of the piece is enhanced by large and very finely engraved palm fronds which gracefully curve up from the sides to provide a frame for "Our Lady of Lourdes". The engraving is very fine, consisting of tiny hand tooled marks with fine ribbon-like engraved lines filling in the leaf form.
This heart was a pendentif piece, intended to hang from a chain, perhaps worn or carried by someone in a religious order. There is a mounted ring at the top center to thread a rope or chain through. There are two silver hallmarks, sanglier, on the top and bottom sides of the heart. It is in very good antique condition: there are a few light indentations at the center back from use and time. The door works properly. Please note that it is solid silver: the photographic lights reflect reds and some yellows but the true color is solid silver.
It is an incredible, large silver sacred heart commemorating a sacred event in religious history.

Oil Painting On Canvas of a Horse By John Ferneley :-

Presented for sale is a historical oil painting on canvas depicting a horse, attributed to John E. Ferneley, 1782 – 1860. The painting depicts a dark dapple-grey hunter set against a hilly landscape and cloudy sky.
Handwriting on the rear of the frame reveals a possible identity of the horse, it reads: "The Hermit by Greyskin, Mount of Charles Davis (died 1867, Huntsman to the Royal Buckhounds." Hermit was the mount of the legendary British equestrian Charles Davis, Huntsman to Her Majesty and First Whip of The Royal Buckhounds from 1821 until 1866. Charles Davis is featured in the book "The Queen's Hounds and Stag-hunting Recollections" by Baron Thomas Lister Ribblesdale and Edward Burrows. The book features an illustration on its cover of Charles Davis astride Hermit. There is a chapter in which Hermit is mentioned as Mr. Davis's favorite mount, and he is depicted riding Hermit in several well-known paintings
The artist, John Ferneley, was born in Thrussington, Leicestershire, England in 1782 and became known as one of the foremost and greatest 19th century painters of sporting horses and hunting scenes. He was quite prolific, and his commissions included many Royals and famous personalities such as Beau Brummel and the Count d'Orsay. He was known to have depicted Charles Davis in at least one or two other paintings on different mounts.
The painting is signed (and possibly dated) in the lower left hand corner, almost invisibly, as the signature is dark against a dark ground. Many of Ferneley's paintings are listed without a signature as many are very hard to find and sometimes purposely hidden. The last photo shows the signature under UV light, and rendered in black and white to show contrast. The painting is in very good condition with some slight in-painting, and is housed in its original frame, which has also had some minor restoration.

Benz

The early history of the automobile can be divided into a number of eras, based on the prevalent means of propulsion. Later periods were defined by trends in exterior styling, size, and utility preferences.
In 1768, the first steam powered automobile capable of human transportation was built by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot.[1]:14
In 1807, François Isaac de Rivaz designed the first car powered by an internal combustion engine fueled by hydrogen.
In 1886, the first petrol or gasoline powered automobile, was invented by Karl Benz.[2] This is also considered to be the first "production" vehicle as Benz made several other identical copies.
At the turn of the 20th century electrically powered automobiles appeared but only occupied a niche market until the turn of the 21st century.
17th and 18th centuries[edit]
Ferdinand Verbiest, a member of a Jesuit mission in China, built the first steam-powered vehicle around 1672 as a toy for the Chinese Emperor. It was of small enough scale that it could not carry a driver but it was, quite possibly the first working steam-powered vehicle .

19th Century Printing Block / Cliché of a Saint Gertrude of Nivelles - from Bavaria - Woodprint :-

This beautiful wooden Printing Block or stereotype was made around 1860 for the Print Shop of the Monastery in Altötting in Bavaria (Germany). It shows a beautiful picture of a Saint Gertrude of Nivelles. It looks great as a decoration, but can still be used to print.
Saint Gertrude of Nivelles was a 7th-century abbess who, with her mother Itta, founded the Abbey of Nivelles located in present-day Belgium.
