This is an awesome and important offering. John Nance Garner served as Vice President from 1933 - 1941, under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Vice President Garner's secretary, Louis M. Friday, would have notable visitors sign the gavel. The gavel has approximately 20 signatures, including Earhart's and Garner's. (The Vice President presides over the Senate; hence, the gavel.)
When Garner passed away on November 7, 1967, tributes poured in from across the nation, but no mention of the bucket quote appeared in print until the Time magazine obituary of November 17, 1967, which stated, "Plain-spoken to the last, he always regretted having given up his Speaker's role for the vice presidency, which he said `wasn't worth a pitcher of warm spit.'"
