Antique Pen, Pencil, Seal Set with Jasper & Celluloid Handles :-

A very pretty antique desk set. The set includes a dip pen, pencil, a wax letter seal and a letter opener. The handle of the wax seal looks like jasper stone, the other 3 are celluloid, the fittings are nickel plate metal. The wax seal has never been engraved. For a size reference the longest instrument which is the pencil is 7" long. The set is in good overall condition and is in the original presentation box. The only thing to note is wear to the nickel mainly on the pen, see photos.

A W.M.F. Geislingen silver - plated Brittania art nouveau dish/basket 1900c. :-

A beautiful glass lined ( original ) WMF Britannia silver-plated metal oval dish / basket - 1900c. The glass liner is original and bears no chips/cracks.
Britannia metal is a pewter-type alloy favoured for its silvery appearance and smooth surface. The composition is approximately and typically 92% tin, 6% antimony, and 2% copper. Britannia is a specific type of pewter and is typically spun rather than cast. It was created by James Vickers in 1770. After the development of electroplating with silver in 1846, Britannia metal was widely used as the base metal for silver plated household goods and cutlery, and often bears the mark EPBM, "electroplated Britannia metal". Britannia metal was generally used as a cheaper alternative to electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) which is more durable. Just a fun footnote to this is the use of britannium to make the Oscar statuettes handed out each year at the Academy Awards. The statuettes are Britannia metal plated with gold!
Size : 23 cm. ( 9 1/16" ) x 13 cm. ( 5 1/8" ).

Superb Antique French Hand Carved Wooden 11.25" Square Box, Casket, Florentine Renaissance Figural Chimera :-

Truly one of the most beautiful boxes ever, this one we found in Paris last autumn and it's taken until now to consider selling it. A large 11.25" square body that is 5" deep, it's perfect for any use - decorative table top or desk box, jewelry chest, cigar box, or for your documents, family letters and treasures. Just look at that elegant carved work. It is of the quality of Gueret Freres, though we find no signature, and in the manner of the Italian Renaissance works, but it is a 19th century treasure. I always am drawn to the fine carved wood works of art. They truly are! Stunning hand carved bas relief up top includes grotesques that have a look of lions - chamber, since they evolve from the florals and urn form. The carved palmettes and arabesque that border the casket are also so elegantly done as to take your breath away. This box belongs to my sister in law, and it's amazing to me that she'll part with it, but we're going back to Paris in a few months to shop for more fabulous antiques so here it is. And a great buy on it, as we did well when we found it. Don't pass this one by. It won't last!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. You can see that it has a working lock and still is complete with the original key. There are no chips on the carvings, and no cracks, hairlines. The interior is nicely finished wood, no evidence of it ever having a fabric or silk lining. While it's perfect for cigar humidor/service, it is not glass lined so can't be fitted with a soaker (please - it will warp the old wood) but you can certainly store wrapped fine cigars inside for guest service. Perhaps a very small rub or scrape to the outer corners, but nothing that detracts from value or enjoyment. The box is extra large at 11.25" square and 5" high when closed.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!

Vintage French Carved Wood Bread Board, "Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread" in French :-

#3 of 3 listing today: Large, wonderful and either fun for table or great for decor, this is a French carved bread board that bears the French words that translate to "Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread" and the added sheaves of wheat. What every Country French kitchen needs, really - isn't it? I buy these whenever I can find nice ones in Paris, and they're harder and harder to find.
Very good to excellent, has been stained as you can see. If you're going to use it for your table use, or to cut your bread, please use butcher block wax on it before you use it. It's very clean, but it does seem to have a wood stain. Great for display (and it has a hook on back for wall-hanging).
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!

RARE c. 1600s-1700s Fine NeedlePoint Tapestry, Mother & Putti, NeedleWork :-

This is the finest stitching in a needlepoint embroidered tapestry we've ever seen. Those stitches on the faces of the figures are less than 1mm each, and even the larger stitches on the panel are smaller than petitpoint items done today. The work you see is one panel of a pair we bought recently out of France, (each sold separately), and represents, we think, Madonna and baby Jesus. The detail and rich colors in silk and wool yarns is remarkable - dating mid-1600s to perhaps early 1700s, it is one of the earliest needlework items we've offered that is complete, undamaged and ready to frame and hang. No, you wouldn't want to turn this one into pillowtops, I think it would be too fragile for that, but it's superb on the stretchers we've found it on and will be a favorite of anyone who collects needle arts, women's art, certainly for its age and fine composition and delivery. I can't begin to imagine how long this would have taken to complete but I can tell you it could well be a life's work in this and its companion panel (sold separately). We've scanned the panel with a ruler so you can see how tiny the stitches really are. Remarkable in so many ways, not the least of which is that it is complete and without rips, tears or restoration. Fabulous!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The panel was worked in last half of 1600s, we're quite certain, and this based on a scrap of similar work we have dated from that period as well as reference books. Smaller than petitpoint, the single stitch embroidery would have taken years to complete. There are no tears, no holes, only the very slightest loss to any of the wool and silk threads used - remarkable museum quality handiwork, needle arts, needlework without equal. Ready to frame, the panels are already perfectly stretched on board backing to help protect from damage. They are not glued, just stretcher-attached, tacked around the outer perimeter. Magnificent. One panel sold in this offering. Another from same embroiderer is offered separately.

RARE Antique French (Bressen) Kiln-fired Enamel Cache Pot Pair, 2 Jardiniere, Bresse Jeweled :-

Exceptional and RARE matched pair of Bresse enamel cache pots or jardiniere, wine coolers for demi bottle, or just decorative pieces you'll love to show off. The only other set I'm aware of are priced near $5000. Our pair still have the interior lift-out liners and will function perfectly for you in use of your choice. The set we have here are in rich cobalt enamel worked with copious amount of hand applied enamel dots and jeweling, typical of the work done in both Sevres and Bresse artisan communities of France. Just look at the intricate hand worked exteriors. The copper outer barrels are, as noted, without loss. Each had one small spot or chip, and we've sent them off to our professional enamelist and now I can't even begin to find the tiny spots, and I know you'll never find them, either. They're fabulous and sure to please. Copper lift-out liners have verdigris, have not been cleaned by us at all but would surely clean up quite well. They do not have holes and will hold fluid just fine.
Very good to excellent condition. Please look at the images to see that there are no chips nor cracks on either of these spectacular RARE old kiln-fired enamel items. You won't notice with the naked eye, but somewhere on each of the 2 we'd found a small imperfection in the enamel, so we had our professional enamelist do a tiny restoration for us. I will note that one of the top mounts is very slightly crooked (view it in our photo - not much but bears mention). Measurements are noted on the photos. We have some fabulous kiln-fired enamels just in - come and see them all and put together your own collection. Some are shown with this well in the final photo, including frame and exceedingly rare pair of jardiniere, cache pot, all sold separately.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
ENAMEL NOTE: This process, which I've written about many times, is one only accomplished with the skill of years and years of practice. The enamel powders are various shades of muddy mauve, taupe, blues, not the least resembling the color they will become once the kiln melts them into the glassine or porcelain like finished product you see here. So an artist is layering on stroke after stroke, working quite literally blind as far as the colors and spacing of the finished outcome he/she hopes to achieve. It is the memory that guides the hand in this art. And subject to such whims of nature and memory, it's always amazing to me that they come out with anything but a glob. I've tried this art, myself, and believe me, it's very difficult. I mostly get globs. The nature of the process is part of the reason why these old kiln-fired objects have such a following and bring the prices they continue to bring.

Charming Antique French Mother of Pearl Sail Boat, Ship, Double Inkwell, Ink Well :-

A wonderful Grand Tour souvenir, this French double inkwell and pen stand is hand made with natural sea shells, mother of pearl remains highly pearlescent and a shimmer of rainbow in the pink to green predominant coloration. Ormolu, silver plated metal and twisted brass wires form a form and rigging for the flowing sails, and a platform into which the 2 original glass inkwells rest. Their caps are the old original and are modeled in the old French sailor's hat style. A little anchor hanging on the front, a round fitting that surely once held a small working compass (no longer with it) and 2 small silver dolphins that form the holder for a pen. The pen shown is not included. It's a prop only, shown for ambiance and scale.
Very good to excellent for age and type. I can disclose that one of the old original glass ink pots is broken, and we've shown it well in our photos. You might be able to find a replacement. The caps are original and still with the set. There is a round fitting that I'm quite sure one had a small compass that has gone missing. One of the nicest of this type of old souvenir, it's incised with a destination name, but I'm unable to make sense of it. Ste. Albresse or something similar, but I'm just not getting it. Perhaps you know the French coastline better than I do and can help us identify this location. Measurements are noted on the photos, but it is almost 9" tallest. There might be some slight roughness to cut edges of the mother of pearl, but I don't find any chips of note. Look it over carefully, please.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!

Antique French Hair Art Memento, Mourning Memorial with Blond Locks, in Napoleon III Frame :-

Antique mid-1800s French hair art memorial, likely a souvenir of a child, since the bright blond hair is rather rare in adult. Sadly, most families buried more than one child in their time, and with no photos, mementos like this were the treasured icon left a parent in mourning. The art was quite popular, and you can see in our images the pages from a hair arts business, showing possible arrangements. This one is larger than most, and has a very heavy frame that seems to be wood, but is very dense, indeed. Unique among those we've found and offered. The cover glass is intact, the hair art adhered to the white opaline glass backing upon which it has been worked.
Very good condition, as noted above, for age and type. No chips nor cracks in cover glass nor in the opaline glass backing to the arranged hair locks. The hair isn't floating - perhaps a piece or two, but largely adhering still and stable. The heavy old wood has a very old and repaired shrinkage crack traversing at 12 o'clock position, visible in our photos for your review. Measurements are noted on the photos.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!

Fine Hand Carved Antique Caryatid Figural Shelf Support, Furniture Salvage Portrait Corbel, 22.25" Tall :-

FABulous hand carved figural caryatid shelf or bracket support, or architectural element. This one is 22.25" tall, big and heavy solid old forest growth oak. I suspect it's been salvaged from a massive piece of carved furniture, or the cabinetry of an old chateau. Full measurements are noted on the photos, as well as are the couple of imperfections (a couple of chips). The face and hair/beard on this one are masterful; the appeal immense. I love the old carved items. Such artistry and skill in the work. Imagine what it would cost to have this carved by hand today. The antiques are always a bargain! No one does work like this in our time, unless it is monstrously expensive. These are fab worked into the cabinetry of your own home, or as support for a shelf in a bathroom - truly enriches and customizes with little effort, the fine decor you're after. A real country French piece, to be sure.
Very good condition for age and type. This one does have a couple of chips and I've noted them on the photos for your inspection and review. For the most part, it's exquisite. The work of a skilled master carver. It might well be Gueret Freres, but it is not a signed piece. The quality is all in evidence, from carving to the heavy fine quality of the wood.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!

1893 Silver Columbian Exposition Cut-Out Commemorative Coin Pin :-

Here is a very nice 1893 silver Columbian Exposition cut-out commemorative coin pin. This coin was first cut-out which took a very skilled jeweller to do. 18k Yellow Gold Elgin Timepiece ~ circa 1887 :-

This timepiece, done in 18k yellow gold, is a piece of history as well as highly collectible. The case work on this timepiece is subtle yet elegant. Both sides have almost a woven look to its background and a faux herald on the front. There is a spot on the herald that would suit a monogram. The back is a bouquet of etched flowers. Both sides also have textured etching on the edges. While it could, and probably was, worn for any occasion, it seems that perhaps it belonged to a woman who worked out of the home. Just our opinion. This wind-up timepiece keeps perfect time. Composition: 18k Yellow Gold; 40 DWT ~ Manufacturer: Elgin; 6 Side ~ Works: 15 Jewels, hand made wind-up ~ Grade: 6 ~ Model: 1 ~ Class ~ 50

1650-1800 Renaissance Revival Carved 31" Architectural Plaque, Grotesques & Putti :-

Absolutely stunning! Most certainly an architectural salvage panel from a Renaissance or Renaissance revival interior, this hand carved panel is a masterpiece of both the sculptor's carving, and also of the anatomical representations thereon. In Renaissance Florence, Italy, it was common in the arts for painters and sculptors to include the likeness of the patron into the painting or artwork, the sculpture, as a means of representing the person who paid him, as someone of great importance. So often we see the Medici family members in religious paintings within the chapels in Florence, as well as others, depicted in processions of historical significance to Christian beliefs and stories (in this case, Catholic). But interior of homes were also decorated in fanciful grotesques, as they were called, and the ceilings and walls of the old Medici Palace there in Florence is rich with these grotesques, as is the adjoined Uffizi Art Museum, and other buildings of the late 1500s to early 1600s. This carved panel is a perfect fit for Florence in that aesthetic era, and may well be just such a panel. This may well be the portrait of a gentleman who lived in Florence when this was carved, and in whose home it was incorporated and later removed/salvaged. It has a look of some depictions of Moses, as well, though we don't normally see Moses in combination with the Florentine grotesques as would be the case here, though there is a winged floating head below, which is the representation of an angel, so it's possible. I have no way to date it other than by the quality of the work, which tells us it is old. The later carvings are, curiously enough, not quite so detailed or fine. I wish we had a signature or the history of this incredibly fine piece. I bought it in Europe, and would dare bet if we had it appraised at Sotheby's or Christie's, they'd suggest it is Renaissance, as well. But we're unsure, and there is a chance it is perhaps 200 years later, Renaissance Revival, still putting it in 1700s or earlier. An incredibly fine work of art. The carving is contained by a frame-in of wood and backed in another piece of wood, probably this has been done much later so this can be hung as art, and perhaps the old original wood back was irregular in finish, something. But we show it as it is. I wish I could think of a place to hang this one in my own home. It is the finest of carving masterpieces, truly. Weighs 7 lbs, 5 oz. (3.3 kg)!

Very good to excellent for age and type. You see there is a small chip on the hand of the putti to far right in your view. The hand carved panel is at least 1700s, but likely to be even earlier, and I think 1600s Florence is it's original setting, from all my Art History background and also all of my considerable (and greatly treasured) time looking at and studying such decorative carving and art in Florence. As noted, it has a thin outer framing, of sorts, and a backing that gives it a more 'finished' look, but those have been added perhaps hundreds of years after the carving was made. This is an architectural piece, to be sure. And one of the finest I've ever had the great pleasure to offer. No woodworms, no splits. A little old age-hairline going on in the encirclement that houses the carved head, center, but it's superficial. Truly an astounding piece.
