Amazing Figural Sea Motif Sterling Silver Sardine Dish in a sea/nautical theme complete with ocean waves, seaweed and barnacles, created by the well known silversmith firm of Wood & Hughes, circa 1880. This piece has great nautical detail work -applied seaweed/barnacles, shell shape and a wave pattern throughout. The dish is irregularly shaped-like a sea shell-with a scalloped border. The rectangular cartouche handle has a monogram of MV (it could be AM if flipped). Dish measures 7 inches by 4 inches and is 1 inch tall; weight is 104 grams/3.34 oz troy. The W & H /Wood & Hughes/sterling hallmark is on the reverse. Condition is excellent-no dent or dings and very little age wear. Definitely a gift/presentation piece used either very little or not at all.
This is truly a rare piece of Sea/Nautical themed sterling silver; there were only a handful of 19th century silversmiths with the ability to create high quality, lifelike sterling silver serving pieces with a Sea/Nautical motif-one of the most famous being Gorham's Narragansett series; George Shiebler and Whiting and Dominick and Haff also all created some fabulous sea motif sterling silver-the majority of these pieces, however, were never produced as a full line, and most were one of a kind, custom designed, special order treasures.
