In the tradition of grand printed lectern Bibles, the Arion Press Folio Bible is a monument to the scriptures, to fine typography, and to fine bookmaking. Not since the Oxford Lectern Bible, designed by the American Bruce Rogers for the Oxford University Press (1935), has a similarly ambitious large folio Bible been attempted. The earlier folio, set in Rogers' Centaur type is a masterpiece of bookmaking, yet its text is the Authorized, or King James Version. Andrew Hoyem decided that a lectern edition should be published in the New Revised Standard Version, the translation sponsored by the National Council of Churches, which is regarded as the most scholarly text today, and to present the Apocrypha as well and the Old and New Testaments. Created by skilled artisans at Arion Press in San Francisco, this Folio Edition of the Holy Bible is printed using traditional letterpress techniques and the finest materials and craftsmanship. "This Bible is unique because this place is unique. It's one of the last shops in the world where all the work on a book is done under one roof", notes Elizabeth Farnsworth of the PBS News Hour. The Arion Press edition is wonderfully suited for use on church pulpits, lecterns, and altars, but it is equally appropriate for libraries and homes where superbly crafted books are appreciated. "There's a clarity and crispness there that takes your breath away. The spacing, weight of the paper, it all starts to catch your eyes. It is a breath-taking book to look at," commented one leading curator of rare books. Prose portions are set full width, while metrical portions are set as double-column. Format: 18 by 13 inches, 1,350 pages. The type is Romulus, designed by Jan Van Krimpen (1892-1958), drawn between 1931 and 1937 for the Enschede Foundry and later developed for machine composition by the Monotype Corporation. The main text is composed and cast in Monotype in 16-point Didot on an 18-point body, while footnotes are in 11-point Didot on a 12-point body. Larger sizes for display are handset. Initial letters, printed in red, were designed by Sumner Stone. Illuminations in gold and colors for the initial letters in a portion of the edition were designed by Thomas Ingmire, who also added the raised gold diamonds to the six-line initials at the beginning of the Testaments and Apocrypha. The paper is mouldmade Somerset from the Inveresk Mill in England. Hand-bound in two volumes, divided between the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah in full black linen, in a black linen box. Edition of 400, of which 150 have illuminated initials (available with illuminated initials at additional cost; also available bound in goatskin with black spine, purple sides, and red piping between at additional cost). 1350 pages.
