Presented for sale is an early 19th century oil on canvas of a Creole Gentlewoman reminiscent of paintings done by Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (1790 - 1864) in Louisiana during the early 1800’s. The young woman sits at an open window, against a deep blue sky with a body of water in the background. She is holding a silver tazza filled with apples and is wearing a gathered gauze bodice under a shawl collar set off by a blue velvet choker. A brown scarf is draped over her arm.
The history of the Creole aristocracy of late 18th and early 19th century Louisiana can be documented in many of the portraits rendered by the itinerant painters who traveled that Southern route. Proud of their heritage, the Creole people sought to retain the subtle nuances of their unique characteristics almost de-Americanizing their images. Vaudechamp was known for his skillfull attention to detail and was much sought after amongst that population.
The contrast of the beautiful dark haired woman against the shaded azure sky is stunning and her face, with her large liquid eyes, is lovely to behold. The portrait is set into a Rococo giltwood frame with an arched inner panel.
The painting has had restoration and patching to the canvas and some inpaint is present under black light; it's been mounted to a board for stabilization. The canvas is raised in places with a slight lifting or bubble, due to age and the result of mounting the canvas. The painting is well done and the subject matter is quite beautiful; there is no apparent signature. The original frame is magnificent and in excellent restored condition.
