ca 1910 Heavily Hallmarked Pique Sterling Silver and Tortoise Box :-

We absolutely adore this extraordinary Edwardian pique tortoise and sterling box. It looks to be a snuff box, and what a way to stash the snuff!
The top boasts a gorgeous piece of domed tortoise shell embellished with a gorgeous onlaid geometric flower in sterling silver.
It's the vivid array of amber tones in the tortoise shell that really steals the show.
The lid and body of the box both feature tradition hallmarks. The rim of the lid exhibits only two; the first of these is the "lion passant", denoting the piece's British origin and silver content. Next is the date mark: a lowercase "L" indicating the year 1910.
The rim of the box also includes these hallmarks and two others. The manufacturer's mark, "I & S", can be seen stamped within a rectangle as well as an anchor (the Birmingham city mark).
There a few very slight dings and dents on the side of the box, as well as some very minor scratching; there is, however, NO visible patination. The silver continues to glisten beautifully. Overall this darling antique box is in very good condition.
It's a heavy little thing for its size!
Measurements: Total height (with lid) is 1 1/6", lid height is ½", box circumference is 5 ½", base diameter is 1 5/8" Weight: 24 grams
