This is a beautiful antique silver lock back with me from China. The condition is very good. The design on one side is a lotus. And on the other side are Chinese characters. It is in great condition. The lock measures 2” tall by 2 1/2” wide and about 1/4” deep. It has three loops on the bottom where, originally, there were silver pieces that hung from them. I am not sure how old this lock is.
These silver lock pendants were worn as a talisman to ward off evil spirits and to keep good fortune close. The script and design on the locks are symbolic of good fortune – usually health and long life. The detail on the design was accomplished by hand hammering of the silver. Most are from the Q’ing Dynasty (1644-1911).
weight 30 gms.
